5 Seamless Tricks For Wearing Your Summer Pieces in the Fall

By Caitlin Burnett

It’s that time again, when long summer days slowly start to fade and the transition into fall begins. That means cozy days, hot drinks, and the changing colors are just around the corner. That also means coats, sweaters, scarves and the rest of your fall staples are on the horizon. But don’t pack up your summer wardrobe just yet—there are so many ways to get some extra mileage out of your favorite summer pieces before the weather fully turns. Those gorgeous pieces you’ve spent the last few months in deserve a few more wears, and all you need are a few simple styling swaps to transition your summer wardrobe into the cooler fall temperatures.

Whether you’re adding a layer or swapping materials, transitioning your summer pieces into fall is beyond easy. Below are 5 tricks for wearing your favorite summer styles in the fall—and looking ultra-chic while doing so.

1.

Add A Cardigan

Most summer outfits can be made fall-ready with the addition of a cozy cardigan. Throw one on over your favorite summer top or belt it around a pretty dress for a chic fix that will take you straight into fall. This is a particularly great trick for when the weather first starts to change and it’s somewhere between hot and cold—simply add or remove the sweater as the weather shifts throughout the day.

2.

Pair With Boots

@emmanuellek

There’s nothing chicer than a dress or skirt paired with sleek fall boots, so adding a pair to your favorite summer styles is a no-brainer. Mini, midi, or maxi lengths look equally cool with boots of all styles, so it’s really a personal preference that you choose to pair together. Whether it’s a sleek pair of knee-high boots with a midi skirt or chunky combat boots with a mini dress, it’s a transitional outfit guaranteed to receive compliments.

3.

Add An Oversize Button-Down

@bridget

Oversize button-downs have been trending hard this summer and show no signs of slowing down for fall. They also make the ideal third piece to throw on over your favorite summer tank or t-shirt to add a bit of warmth and interest to your outfit. You can even use your favorite linen shirt for this and create a complete fall look by recycling your summer wardrobe.

4.

Tie A Sweater Around Your Shoulders

@rebeccalaurey

Banish cold shoulders in your summer tanks and tees with the chicest trick in the book: A sweater strategically tied around your shoulders. This two-second styling trick allows you to continue to wear your favorite summer tops in a way that feels much more sophisticated. It also provides the perfect pop of texture to your look, so the chunkier the sweater the better.

5.

Swap Shorts For Jeans

@devinbrugman

All it takes to make some of your cutest summer tops work for fall is the swap of shorts for jeans. Picture your go-to summer shorts outfit, and then simply swap out the bottom half for denim. It’s time for your jeans to come off the bench and back into your full-time wardrobe rotation. Whether it’s a pair of rigid high-rise or sleek skinny jeans, pairing your summer tanks and t-shirts with denim is the easiest way to transition into fall in style.
