7 It Girl-Approved Hairstyles To Wear All Summer

By Marissa DeSantis

As essential as a little black dress is to your wardrobe or a bright red lipstick in your makeup rotation, there are certain hairstyles, like undone waves and sleek updos, that will always be go-tos. But that doesn’t mean you can’t switch things up. And thankfully, there’s no shortage of hairstyle inspiration this summer with all of our favorite stylists, celebrities, and influencers trying out the biggest trends first.

Ahead, we’ve rounded up seven of our favorite hairstyles for summer—from recurring looks to ’90s throwbacks that are making a comeback.

1.

Zig-Zag Part

While everyone was debating the whole center versus side part on social media, we were fixated on a totally different part—the zig-zag. Though you may remember this from the ’90s (most likely paired with chunky highlights and flipped ends), models like Bella Hadid are bringing the imperfect part back.

Comb your hair back and use the thin, pointed end of a teasing comb to draw a zig-zag line starting from the front of the hair and working your way as far back as you like. You can copy Bella and pull your hair back into a messy top knot or leave it down (textured or straight).

Face-Framing Pieces

There’s something effortlessly chic about French influencer Camille Charriere‘s low knot with face-framing pieces, no matter what the season. While copying her look is always a solid choice, the slightly undone style is just as cool when paired with curtain bangs or a full fringe like Margot Robbie at the Oscars. Or, if updos aren’t your thing, try Camila Coelho‘s face-framing hairstyle with beachy waves worn half up, half down.

Baby Braids

Add a ’90s twist to your face-framing pieces with baby braids. The mini three-strand braids are much easier to master than more complicated braiding techniques, and they can be worn a number of different ways. Gigi Hadid even swapped out the braids for a bubble effect by adding tiny elastics throughout the length of her hair.

Claw Clip

The scrunchie isn’t going anywhere, but another ’90s staple—the claw clip—has been added back into the mix. The current model off-duty look of choice for everyone from Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner to Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, the claw clip makes styling your hair as simple as twirling it into a knot and clipping it into place. Whether you opt to twist all of your hair back or try a half up, half down style, the detail is in the claw clip.

Barbie Doll Ponytail

Celebrity stylists like Chris Appleton see your typical summer ponytail and raise you this Barbie-inspired pony that’s full of bounce and shine. The key to creating the glamorous updo (as shared by Appleton in this tutorial) is following the line of the cheekbone to determine the placement of the ponytail. To keep it completely smooth, Appleton uses Color Wow Cult Favorite Firm + Flexible Hairspray, and for that high shine, he sprays the hair with Color Wow Extra Mist-ical Shine Spray as he curls each section.

Hair scarves took over the fall 2021 collections for fashion houses like Versace, Dior, and Max Mara, but the accessory also looks chic poolside. The retro style, which was a favorite of Jacqueline Kennedy and Princess Grace Kelly (in fact, the Gucci Flora print silk scarf was originally designed for the latter), can be worn knotted under your chin or tied at the back of your head. No matter what your preference, the scarf serves a practical purpose, too, as it shields your hair and scalp from the sun.

Pigtails

A summer go-to, pigtails can be as simple or complicated as you like. For something that requires minimal effort, follow influencer Veronica Ferraro’s lead with three-strand braided pigtails that are slightly undone thanks to face-framing pieces. If you want something trendier, try Negin Mirsalehi’s pigtails, which can be worn with texture or sleek and straight. Celebrity hairstylist Sabrina Porsche shared a full how-to with Shay Mitchell, including some of her best tips, like faking fuller hair with clip-in extensions.
