Sweaters In These Underrated Colors Will Rule 2021 — Here’s Why

By Danielle Naer

Every December, fashion insiders readily await the arrival of Pantone’s Color Of The Year. Not only does the shade set the tone for the months ahead — but it also ignites a surefire color trend across the fashion, beauty, and home spaces. In case you didn’t already hear, the Pantone Color Institute issued two key hues for 2021: Ultimate Gray and Illuminating, the first of which is already popping up as a foundational shade in the outfits of Leonie Hanne, Grece Ghanem, and other cool girls. The vehicle? Sweaters.

Let us explain. “Ultimate Gray is emblematic of solid and dependable elements which are everlasting and provide a firm foundation,” the announcement on Pantone’s site reads.

Essentially, the color meets the moment — offering us (and our closets) a sense of stability to lead into the new year with, on the heels of a 2020 that’s become synonymous with uncertainty.

Therein, it’s no surprise that style icons are choosing to channel the hue into their favorite knit cardigans and jumpers.

Like the color, sweaters are the ultimate dependable must-have, bringing an understated elegance that easily serves as the basis of every outfit. The shade and the silhouette are a perfect match, making it a top priority item to add to your 2021 wardrobe.

The shade’s complement, Illuminating, is a cheerful yellow that makes any item look as though it were infused with the warmth of the sun. “Illuminating is aspirational and gives us hope,“ the site reads. As for how Pantone suggests styling them together? “Ultimate Gray provides a great bouncing off point, with Illuminating bringing in some brightness by way of a scarf, footwear, handbag, [or] shawl.”

That said, shop 9 stylish sweaters in Ultimate Gray & Illuminating Yellow ahead — and be sure to tie in your own radiant accessories, the Pantone-approved way.
