ICYMI: Fashion Editors Say These Accessories Should Be Left In 2020

By Danielle Naer

With 2021 finally in full swing, our closets are officially at a crossroads. As we say goodbye to one year, we start looking forward to what’s next – particularly in terms of the up-and-coming trends that are forecasted to be big in the future months. Fashion insiders are using the styles that designers sent down the runways this fall to help them orient their own closets around what’s slated to stay cool. That said, you’re surely hanging onto a few styles that will become passé, as well as some styles that will fit right in this year.  To make it simple, we’re nailing down which accessories to hang on to and which to give one last encore before retiring it.

To browse the complete list, read on:

Take: Tote Bags | Leave: Pillow Clutches

@a_typelist

Style insiders are sure to keep indulging in the soft leather trend through 2021, and we have pillow clutches to thank for it. That said, the bag peaked in Spring 2020 and made its debut a whole year prior, so it may not be the strongest investment at this late stage. A safer bet? A soft leather tote bag, whether from Chanel or Cuyana. If you already own one, relish it while you can and consider taking it to the resale market.

Take: Hair Pins & Clips | Leave: Hair Ties

@clairerose

Most are looking for any reason to part with their strand-snapping hair ties, and the latest accouterments to keep your tresses in place are far more exciting than, say, ‘80s-era scrunchies. Claw clips and hairpins are great for swiping your hair up into a polished, unfussy style at a moment’s notice — and they won’t break the bank.

Take: Hobo Bags | Leave: Micro Purses

@mariakragmann

When micro purses first exploded into the mainstream, they were ahead of their time — great for holding credit cards and hand sanitizers in a time where women were toting tablets, a change of shoes, and full makeup bags. Unlike 2020, we have dreams and plans of going places in 2021 (and carrying it all with us). Apparently, so do the designers who filled Spring/Summer 2021 runways with oversized hobo bags.

Take: Mary Janes | Leave: Ballet Flats

@emmanuellek_

A simple rounded flat can add a dainty touch to any polished look — but there’s something even better that’s returning in 2021. With platforms and block heels alike, Mary Janes are officially “in,” and they’re just getting started. Consider wearing yours with tights and a car coat, or jeans and a silky blouse.

Take: Gold Charm Necklaces | Leave: Chain Link Necklaces

@aysha.sow

Miami-inspired chunky gold chains were all over the place in 2020 — from strappy sandals to necklaces and back again. We’re sticking with yellow golds next year — but consider swapping your chain-link styles with a meaningful charm necklace. Make it a fun gifting moment by getting matching ones for you and the other women in your tribe, whether your sister, mother or a longtime friend.
