Superfood Hot Chocolate

So, let’s talk about pregnancy cravings. I’ve never been a sweet tooth but when I’m pregnant? Hide your dessert. I’m serious–it’s all I want to eat! In particular, hot chocolate with marshmallows has been my go-to with baby #3.

Since I want to maintain a healthy diet (yet still treat myself!) I decided to start researching a recipe that’s a bit more “guilt-free.” This Superfood Hot Chocolate (via The Healthy Maven) was a serious find. Not only is it a delicious way to enjoy your craving but you get the added immune-boosting and health benefits of its ingredients.

Directions:

  1. Add milk of choice to a medium-sized sauce pot and bring to a boil.
  2. Lower to a simmer and add cacao powder and stir.
  3. Add in maca powder, turmeric and cinnamon and continue to stir.
  4. Stir in honey until well combined.
  5. Add coconut oil and whip in until all chunks are melted and mixture becomes thick.
  6. Serve immediately.

Just in case you need a superfood recap, here’s why these ingredients are so amazing:

CACAO: Contains high amounts of iron, calcium, and magnesium. Boosts serotonin in the central nervous system. Rich in polyphenols that help reduce bad cholesterol and help heart health.

MACA POWDER: Supports adrenal glands to help balance hormones. Packed with amino acids and minerals that boost the immune system. Maca has also been found to increase fertility.

TURMERIC: Reduces inflammation and great for your immune system. Be careful, though–this spice will stain your clothing or countertop. I always lay a paper towel down when using turmeric.

RAW HONEY: A great source of healing enzymes. Acts as a natural laxative to help with constipation.

COCONUT OIL: I refer to this as the “superfood of all superfoods” since I use it for everything! Helps immunity, digestion, and absorption of other key minerals and antioxidants.
