The Beauty Products You Can Actually Wear To The Gym

I’ve been in #BikiniAfterBaby mode so I’ve been working out a lot. As much as I would love to always hit the gym bare faced, there are times when I need a little something. But, what do you get when you mix certain beauty products and sweat? A complete and utter skincare disaster!

To avoid clogged pores and irritation (and major streaking, of course!) it’s all about choosing the right products.

Here are some of my must-haves for sweatproof and gym-ready beauty:

An Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer:

The key words here are oil-free. The worst feeling in the entire world is sweating with a heavy face product. It normally results in clogged pores and irritation. Not cute!

Instead of wearing a full coverage product, I switch up my routine with a tinted moisturizer. I actually have a few in my rotation depending on what type of workout I’ll be doing. If it’s something less strenuous like yoga, I’ll use a mid-coverage product like Nars Velvet Matte Skin Tint. It gives me a little color but it’s still light enough so it doesn’t irritate my skin. For those super sweaty workouts, I stick to the classic Embryolisse Emulsion Hydra-Mat. A model favorite! It’s colorless but if your workout is hard enough, you won’t need that much color anyway.

A Full-Coverage Concealer:

Okay, I know I just said to skip the full coverage but keep reading. If you really feel that you need some spot correction, go ahead. You can use your heavy matte concealer! I know this sounds a little counter intuitive but those light and luminous concealers are just going to sweat off and streak.

With that said, I still wouldn’t put concealer on the areas of your face that are prone to clog (forehead, around the nose, cheeks.) The heavy product should only go under your eyes or maybe for any hyperpigmentation. For dark circles, Laura Mercier’s High Coverage Concealer for under eye is everything.

If you’re trying to cover up acne, be careful. The wrong product can be like adding fuel to the already huge fire. Bare Minerals has a special Blemish Remedy Concealer that is non-comedogenic and heals redness with aloe. I would still only use for a pimple emergency, though. Bare is best!

A Water-Based Blush

An oil-free and lightweight blush is better than a cream if you are sweating. I’ve made this mistake many times. Cream blush ends up melting all the way down your face…literally. Recently, I discovered a new watercolor blush that I’m OBSESSED with. It’s from Stila’s Aqua Glow collection. This product adds just a splash of color like it was meant to be there anyway. Oh, and it’s waterproof and buildable which means you can add a bit more while leaving the gym. Love it!

A Waterproof Mascara

If you work out and you wear makeup, you’ve had raccoon eyes. That’s just how it is. I’ve actually had to stop a workout because of the stinging pain of mascara in my eye. It should go without saying that waterproof mascara is a lifesaver.

The only downfall of waterproof? It can damage your lashes. Most formulas are designed to stay on through anything which means the removal of the product can cause some wear and tear. Luckily, some beauty brands have come out with their own waterproof mascara with vitamins that actually promote healthy lash growth. Tarte Cosmetics Lifted Sweatproof Mascara is a great pick (even for everyday use!)

If you want to stick to your same waterproof formula, just make sure you are removing it correctly. A lot of people assume that their cleanser will take care of it but that’s not usually the case. It’s important to use a gentle remover such as micellar water (I like Garnier’s Waterproof version or Bioderma!) and a cotton pad. Pour the water on the pad, press in the product continuously, and wipe downward. This allows the mascara to dissolve quicker and not cause as much damage.

A Shadow Stick

Put down the powder eyeshadows! If you wear them to work out, you will probably end up with color down to your chin. Instead, use a long-wear shadow stick that stays in place even during a major sweat sesh. Bobbi Brown’s Long-Wear Shadow Sticks are the easiest to use. I can tell you for a fact that I’ve gotten through an hour long cardio workout and I still have a pretty gold sheen on my lids. My favorite and most natural pick is the Dual-Ended stick from Bobbi Brown in Peach Mimosa or Truffle. Add a bit at the water line for an even bolder look, if needed.

A Light Brow Gel

I’m a firm believer that brows frame the face. I’m also one of those types of people who wears brow gel even when they are just hanging around the house. When I work out, I use a sweatproof version like Glossier’s Boy Brow because it also has a subtle tint to it. Not only does it keep my brows in place but I’ve also realized it helps sweat not run into my eyes as much. I know, it’s super weird but true.

You’ll actually find that if you just use a brow gel you might not need any other product. It truly makes a difference to the face.

Extra tip: when you are applying brow gel, always brush the direction the hair is growing!

An Invisible Setting Powder

I love a nice glow but there’s a difference between looking dewy and looking sweaty. If I’m done with my workout and I’m not able to cleanse my face right away, I always have an anti-shine product on hand. It’s the next best thing to avoid excess oil and clogged pores.

I’ve always been a huge fan of blotting papers because of how convenient they are. The black charcoal blotting linens from Boscia are some of the best. Charcoal is one of the best ingredients to detoxify the skin post-workout. The budget-friendly brand, NYX Cosmetics, also has a charcoal version that does the same job.

NEW PRODUCT ALERT! I was at Sephora recently (not a surprise!) and saw that Supergoop! has a translucent setting powder with a built-in brush. It actually sets the makeup so you can avoid shine before it happens.

Nourishing Lip Balm

My lips always get chapped when I work out even if I’m constantly sipping water. It can be really painful. I normally would just grab one of my favorite thick balms (I live and die by By Terry Baume de Rose!) but they don’t work as well when you are sweating. Not only do they slide right off but the stickiness isn’t the best feeling either.

The key is to use a lighter balm that will stay on and sink in. Stila Cosmetics has a great Color Calm lipstick in neutral colors that match the color of your lips. It’s honestly just like an Instagram filter for your lips. You won’t even be able to tell you have anything on!  If you’re the type that likes to wear a bit of color, try the Color Balm in the shade Misty.

A Heat Mask

As you know, I’m all about the double-duty products. This particular product is an actual game changer. One of my favorite new brands, Yuni, has come out with a Hot Head Microveil Hair Treatment, which is a heat-activated leave-in conditioning mist that actually treats and repairs your hair while you’re working out. Ummm, how amazing is that?! You don’t even need to rinse it out afterward.

What are your favorite sweatproof products? Comment below! I’ll need some suggestions for summer, too!

Watch: My Top 7 Beauty Secrets Of All Time

I LOVE a good beauty secret. And let me tell you…I have a ton. When I was a model, I didn’t just sit in the makeup chair quietly. Nope. Not me! I asked question after question. I wanted to know exactly how they got that look and all of their secrets. And today, I’m sharing them with you on YouTube!

Watch the video below to learn my top 7 beauty secrets…OF ALL TIME!

Here’s a recap:

Beauty Secret #1: Use A Green Concealer To Counteract Redness

Dab it around your nose or anywhere there is a little redness. Blend it all in and use foundation to conceal those problem spots even more.

Product Recommendation: L.A Girl PRO Conceal High Definition

Beauty Secret #2: A Nude Eyeliner Makes Your Eyes Pop

One of the best tricks I’ve ever learned! I literally found out about this over 20 years ago from my makeup artists. Use nude eyeliner on the waterline to open up your eyes and look more awake and bright. After applying, squeeze your eyes together so it transfers to your lash line. It will give you an even brighter look!

Product Recommendation: Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes Inner Rim Brightener

Beauty Secret #3: A Nude Liner=Fuller Lips

Choose a lip liner almost the exact color of your natural lips and slightly overline. The keyword here is slightly. If you go too overboard, you’ll end up looking like a crazy person. The last step is applying gloss for the final touch.

Product Recommendation: MAC Cosmetics Lip Pencil in Boldly Bare

Beauty Secret #4: The Tissue Trick

Let’s be honest–lip color can fade pretty fast. If you’re like me, I don’t want to reapply during the day so long lasting lip color is a must-have. I’ve been using this tissue trick for a long, long time. All you do is apply your lip color normally, place a tissue over your lips, dust with translucent powder, and voila! Top it off with one more coat of color and you’re good to go!

Product Recommendation: Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Luminous Modern Matte Lipstick in Lost Cherry & Honest Beauty Invisible Blurring Powder

Beauty Secret #5: Lip Balm As A Multi-Use Product

This is an old model trick from way back in the day. All you do is dab some gloss on the top of your eyelids, brow bone, cupids bow, and anywhere the light hits. It sounds simple but makes a major difference! A natural, dewy glow that takes little to no effort.

Product Recommendation: Rodin Olio Lusso Lip Balm

Beauty Secret #6: No McDonald’s Arches

I know this may sound funny but it’s one of my biggest hair pet peeves. What’s a McDonald’s Arch you ask? It’s basically when the front portion of your hair actually arches. I love fullness and volume as much as the next person but sometimes it can go too far. To stop these arches, all you need to do is blow dry it down, spray with a bit of hairspray, clip it down with a tissue to prevent creases, spray again, and leave it. I know this may sound complicated but start your routine with this so it can set while you are doing your makeup. Take out the clips and no more arches!

Beauty Secret #7: Alcohol Pads For Sweating

What’s worse than sweating through your dress or shirt? Um, nothing! It’s horrible and embarrassing and I hate every second of it. I always, always pack some alcohol wipes in my purse for this reason. It’s super discrete and with one swipe can counteract the sweating.

Skincare Must-Have: Nyakio Beauty + A Q&A With The Founder, Nyakio Grieco

Many of my most treasured beauty secrets came from my momma. I remember watching her put on face cream in the bathroom mirror while she gave me all her tips. The best one? Always start with the neck and go up. (With that said, never forget the neck. Ever!) She also taught me the power of a little rouge and I still love my blush today. She knew her stuff and she still does. Dottie Sims looks DAMN good!

That’s why I’m so inspired by my friend, Nyakio Grieco’s new skincare line, Nyakio. As a first-generation American of Kenyan descent, she spent a lot of time traveling to Kenya to see her grandmother as a child. While there, Nyakio would learn family beauty secrets that would spark her interest in skincare. Her line, Nyakio, is inspired and dedicated to these very secrets.

I love her products and especially the story behind them. Scroll below to read a special Q&A with Nyakio about her line, the ingredients, and what makes them so special!

1)  What sparked your interest in the beauty industry? Specifically, skincare?

My beauty journey began when I was eight years old visiting my grandmother in Kenya. She taught me my first family beauty secret, and at that point my interest to create a global skincare line was sparked! My greatest inspiration comes from those family beauty secrets, and those beauty secrets shared with me by my girlfriends and discovered in my travels around the globe.

2) What does beauty mean to YOU?

Beauty to me is standing in your own light, strength and truth. Compassion, kindness, and confidence radiate from the inside to the outside and give you a naturally beautiful glow.

3. What are some of your favorite family beauty secrets?

Some of my favorite beauty secrets were passed down to me from my Kenyan grandmother who taught me to use Kenyan Coffee Beans and sugarcane to exfoliate my skin.  My grandfather was a medicine man, and stories about him extracting oils from nature to treat the skin inspire me as well. I love sharing these beauty secrets from my family as well as those shared with me by my friends and discovered in my travels.

4. What type of products are currently in your line?

Grounded in ethically and sustainable sourced ingredients, nyakio combines cultural traditions with modern, results-driven formulas. The line features a five regimen collection: (Cleanse, Exfoliate, Restore, Moisturizer and Treat) that work together to hydrate, revitalize, smooth and provide anti-aging benefits. A collection of cultural traditions and global beauty secrets that help to deliver naturally ageless beauty!

5. Where are your ingredients sourced from?

I proudly source ethical and sustainable natural ingredients, including unique, cold pressed oils from 13 countries (including Kenya, Peru, India, China, Mali, Ghana, Spain ) around the globe. Our journey takes us around the world in search of pure, effective and sustainable ingredients sourced through Community Commerce to support women’s employment and empowerment for a better living.

Formulated without sulfates, phthalates, parabens, mineral oil, petroleum, formaldehyde, and butylene glycol.

6. If you could pick a “must-have” product from your line, what would it be?
I love each and every one of my babies in the nyakio line! I would say that our Nyakio Firming Face Balm featuring Tamanu Oil from India is my constant go to. It’s sort of a magic balm. Not only is it formulated to help minimize the signs of aging on your face, I use it on my neck nightly as I’m a side sleeper and worry about aging in that area. I also use any extra on dry skin areas like my cuticles, heels, elbows. I even use it as a highlighter on my cheeks after applying make up! Apply to palm of your hands rub together and it melts into this multi-tasking wonder!! I also carry the Nyakio Quinoa de-puffing and firming eye cream with me everywhere I go!  The ceramic tip applicator is instantly cooling and wakes up my tired eyes!
All Nyakio products are available EXCLUSIVELY at ULTA and Also, check out her beautiful sizzle video below!

My Favorite New Beauty Launches For Spring

I love beauty products, especially when I try out something new. And as you can see…momma went shopping! I can go a little overboard in the name of beauty but they don’t call me a “product junkie (whore)” for nothing.

This spring, it’s all about a fresh glow. Here are some of my favorite new beauty launches of the season:

Glossier Cloud Paint:

I’m in love a cream blush and I love Glossier so I KNEW I’d be obsessed with this product. It’s gel based which makes it buildable and easy to apply. It’s also sheer which blends into the skin beautifully. I’ve been dabbing a bit on the apples of my cheeks and across the bridge of my nose. There are four colors but I prefer the Dusk shade. It doubles as a bronzer, too! Oh, and it doesn’t hurt to add that EVERYONE seemed to be wearing it on the Oscar red carpet.

Wander Beauty On-The-Go Blush & Illuminator:

I mean, they had me at “on-the-go!” But, seriously. Wander Beauty is definitely becoming the new it brand. I love that I can throw this stick into my purse and have blush and highlighter for whenever I need.

Frank Body Glow Mask:

You’ve probably heard of Frank Body from the super popular coffee scrubs they have. Not going to lie–coffee is a great exfoliator especially for any cellulite issues. They’ve recently come out with a face mask that brings a serious glow factor. You also only need to leave it on for 5 minutes to get the full result so it’s perfect for mommas!

Thank You Farmer Sun Project Shimmer Sun Essence:

Every spring/summer, I’m always on the hunt for a new sunscreen. And, I think I’ve found a winner! It’s unlike any product I’ve seen recently. The brand, Thank You Farmer, is Korean which is how you know it’s good. K-Beauty is EVERYTHING! This sunscreen is SPF 30 and has a shimmery pink finish on the skin. A highlighter and a sun protector? Yes, please.

R+Co Palm Springs Pre-Shampoo Treatment Mask

This product is especially for people with damage from heat styling, coloring, or from being out in the sun. It’s like that extra boost to your conditioning treatment. Apply to dry hair, leave on for 10 minutes, and then shampoo. It also smells AMAZING! Like a literal vacation.

Lipstick Queen Mornin’ Sunshine Lipstick:

This product is magic. It goes on yellow…but turns coral. Like a really, really pretty coral. It’s super moisturizing, too!

Milk Makeup Blur Stick:

This oil-free and silicone-free product has been called a snapchat filter for your face. I mean, who doesn’t want that? The blur stick looks beige but goes on clear to minimize pore size and any other imperfections. I’ll be honest–I bought this product the day it came out. It’s so good. You can apply it as a primer or just wear alone.

Litoralle Aromatica Isola Rosa Perfume:

For all the people who love Le Labo but can’t get over the price point, meet Litoralle Aromatica. This LA-based perfumery designs, creates, packages, and labels by hand all in small batches. Their newest scent, Isola Rosa is so fresh for spring. The best part? You only need one little spritz. The scent lasts all day!

What are your beauty must-haves for spring? Comment below! Let’s be honest– a girl can never have too many!

My Favorite Beauty Trends From Fashion Week

I love experimenting with beauty. Every year during Fashion Week, I look forward to seeing what the new trends are so I can try them out for myself.

This season on the runway, it was all about the BOLD and the BARE. Here are some of my favorites:

Jason Wu: Colored Liner + A Bold Red Lip

Yes, this goes against everything we’ve been told. It used to be that you never paired a bold eye with a lip…but in this case, it works. Since the lid itself is bare, the colored liner blends nicely with the pop of red on the lip.

When it comes to liner, it really depends on your eye color. The bright blue, seen on the runway at Jason Wu, is perfect for anyone with blue eyes. For brown eyes, go a little bit darker with a navy. Green eyes look great with a rich plum. I tend to prefer using liquid liner rather than powder because it’s easier to apply. And, if you want some bright color without the boldness of a liner–a colored mascara works, too!

Derek Lam: Frosty Blue Shadow

I love, love, love this understated look. Pair a frosty blue or silver lid with a nude lip. It’s so romantic! For a night out, add a bit of liner your top lid to make your eyes pop more.

I love the richness of a deep burgundy red–especially in a monochromatic look. To tone it down a bit, I loved Kendall Jenner’s look. A muted burgundy on the eyes and a bold burgundy on the lip.
