Winning Recipe: My Southern Spice Tea



Here’s another little joke for my fellow Southerners:

You know you’re from the South when…
You put Tang in your tea.

For those of you who aren’t from the South, I’m referring to one of my all-time favorite regional delicacies: Southern Spice Tea. Putting Tang in your tea might sound a little odd, yes, but don’t knock it till you try it! Growing up in Kentucky, we made Spice Tea every winter. It’s easy and oh-so-delicious. Here’s my family recipe in case you want to give it a try this season…


  • ½ Tbsp. powdered instant tea (Lipton works well)
  • ½ Tbsp. Tang
  • ½ Tbsp. powdered instant lemonade (Country Time makes a good one)
  • Nutmeg
  • Cinnamon 

Combine the powdered tea, lemonade, and Tang in a mug. Add a cup of hot water (or more for less concentrated tea) and stir well. Top off with a dash of nutmeg and a pinch of cinnamon. Recipe can easily be multiplied to make more than one cup at a time.
