How To: Take A Sample Sale By Storm

How To: Take A Sample Sale By Storm

Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to co-host an AMAZING event with my dear friend, Rachel Zoe, called Super Saturday here in Los Angeles. The event brings top luxury designer goods at 30-50% to guests with a passion for fashion and charity. All proceeds go to ovarian cancer research and funding through the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund (OCRF.) Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death from gynecologic cancers in the United States, and the fifth leading cause of cancer death among American women.

(P.S please remember to make appointments with your gynecologist once a year for check-ups. Early detection is key and can make a huge difference!)

Over 2,000 people attend and it’s always one of my favorite events of the year. When you mix sample sales with charity, what’s not to love!? Even if you couldn’t make it to the event, you can still donate online at OCRF’s website.

Speaking of sample sales, I want to let you all in on a little secret…I am a sample sale pro. Growing up, my momma taught me how to shop a sale with the best of them. We would hunt through thrift stores and estate sales searching for the best deals. I definitely learned some tricks.

(BTW…I LOVED these necklaces from Hipchik Couture!

Super Saturday is probably one of my favorite sample sales EVER. With designers such as Diane Von Furstenberg, Rag & Bone, and Theory (to name a few) it can get super competitive. Let’s just compare it to The Hunger Games but in heels…and for a good cause!

Here are my 5 tips on how to score killer merchandise at a sample sale (and make it out alive!)

1. Prepare, Prepare, Prepare:

This is SUPER important. If you are going to be a serious shopper, you better know exact location and payment options. Many sample sales are cash only. Frantically trying to find an ATM (while two other women are breathing down your neck for that handbag) will induce an anxiety attack in any of us. If you know what designers will be featured at the sale, do your research. It’s important to price compare so you don’t overspend on something you can find cheaper online. Also, if you know you are dying for that half-off Theory blazer from last season, make that the top priority. I promise you...it will make your hunt a lot easier!

2. Do NOT Be Late:

When I’m telling you these sales get competitive, I mean it. Women will get there at the crack of dawn waiting in that line. Even if you aren’t as extreme, just make sure you show up at least thirty minutes early. This is not the time to be fashionably late. The early bird catches the Chanel espadrilles in this game and you have to make sure you don’t miss out!

3. Bring Your Wing Woman:

We all have that friend who is the voice of reason especially while shopping. If you know you are an indecisive person, a wing woman will help you navigate through the fashion jungle. She’ll tell you what you need, what you should ditch, and what you may NEVER find again (aka sample sale gold). Most sales are final so it’s important to have your wing woman there to help make those tough decisions. She also can be an extra set of hands. I actually have a friend who “boxes out” at sample sales with techniques from her high school basketball days.

4. See an imperfection? Say something!

Don’t be afraid to speak up if you see a missing button or a hole! It really pays to ask for a reduction. They may say no but it never hurts to ask. There also is a huge difference between samples and overstock. “Samples” are items of clothing that designers make just for sample sales, which happen to be a less quality product while “overstock” is the same item that would be sold in stores but just wasn’t sold through retail. You’ll know if it’s a “sample” if the item doesn’t have a label sewn in. Most sample sales are actually overstock product but it’s still smart to know what you are paying for and get the best for your money!

5. Dress accordingly:

Flats and a huge tote bag are a MUST. Excuse me for being dramatic but you are not going to want to have anything slow you down…especially anything uncomfortable. I love bringing a cross body bag or a cute leather backpack so I can have my hands free to pick up the goods!

And most importantly…HAVE FUN!
