I’m in my last week of my last trimester, or as I like to call it… the dark days. I know that sounds dramatic, but if you’ve ever been pregnant before, you probably know what I mean!
First there’s the swelling of the feet. They don’t even look like my feet at this point! It’s totally crazy. The only things that I’ve found that help are acupuncture, putting my feet up as much as possible, and drinking barley water, a trick that acupuncturist, herbalist, yoga teacher, and doula extraordinaire Natalie Lewis taught me about! Barley water is made by boiling pearled barley, and yes, it's a little gross, but excellent for edema or swelling.
Then there’s the carpal tunnel syndrome. Yes, my right hand is ENTIRELY numb! Literally can’t feel a thing. You can wear a splint, and again, acupuncture might help, but the best thing is making your partner massage you 24/7!!
Lastly, I’ve been nesting like crazy!!! The maternal instincts are really kicking in, people! I’ve cleaned my garage, organized my closets, and put the whole pantry in order—all with one hand mind you! I want to clean EVERYTHING in sight, but I just have to remind myself to relax, breathe, eat well (and take 2,000 mg per day of Vitamin C to build a thick amniotic sac and prevent premature birth—another tip from Natalie Lewis)… because in less than a week, we’ll finally get to meet our little guy and I can’t think of anything I’ve ever looked forward to more.
