Mélange is a unique color effect created by pattern. The word mélange itself comes from the French word mêler meaning to mix. It is prevalent in knits and sweaters, but also well known in cotton fabrics as well. Tricot, cheviot and twill are popular examples of mélange.
Although I don’t think the mélange trend ever completely left the building, it is definitely back in full fashion force looking as chic as ever. If you are not quite familiar with the trend or are looking for some fall fashion inspiration, take a look at my Pinterest board dedicated to all things mélange. Mélange has definitely graduated beyond the chunky sweater of the '90s.
I love how designers like Isabel Marant are giving me my mélange fix with this updated take on the oversized sweater. I like to pair my mélange with solid colored pieces and even denim. I’m definitely feeling fall with this resurrected trend!! Maybe the reason I’m so drawn to this look right now is because Los Angeles has not given up on the summer heat.
You don’t have to be fancy to bring on the mélange. From casual to dressed up, mélange can take care of you from head to toe. I love these chic little tennis shoes from Volcom to complete a look. The heather gray color in sweats definitely qualifies as mélange. And I have to say these cozy lounge pants fit my relaxing needs perfectly.
Don’t think that mélange has to be only in black and white. There are so many color options to explore!! Take a look at my multi-colored mélange lovely pictured above. To all my ladies out there… this is a great trend that can kick your look up a notch without any heavy lifting.
