You’ve probably spent your fair share of time poring over gift guides this holiday season, deciding on the perfect presents for all of your friends and family. But what about your hairstylist, manicurist, babysitter, and mailman? While giving gifts to these and other service people certainly isn’t mandatory, it’s always appreciated. Plus, if you’ve ever tried to get in for an emergency root touch-up appointment, you know that it can help to be on your hairstylist’s good side!
Here are a few of my gifting tips:
- For services that you tip on like haircuts and manicures, leave an additional 20 percent (on top of your normal tip) for your December visit. Everyone can use a little extra cash during the holiday shopping season.
- If you’d rather not give cash, gift cards to coffee shops and restaurants are a safe bet.
- If (and only if) you are positive that the recipient drinks, you can’t go wrong with a nice bottle of wine.
- While it is the thought that counts with homemade treats, your postal worker could have allergies and/or diet restrictions that you don’t know about. Stay away from gifting baked goods to people you don’t have a personal relationship with.
Do you have any other gifting etiquette questions for me?
