Fit Food: 4 Healthy Twists to Your Mashed Potatoes



I don’t know a soul who doesn’t love mashed potatoes. And when they’re sitting right in front of you at the Thanksgiving table… who can resist?! But lying in a food coma after Turkey Day dinner is one feeling I’m not a fan of—and traditional mashed potatoes always seem to leave me feeling sluggish. Luckily I’ve found four great ways to take some of the guilt out of this guilty pleasure. Check them out and tell me what you think!

1. Ditch the peeler. The skin of the potato is the part that’s richest in vitamins and highest in fiber, which helps to keep you full longer. Why deprive yourself of that added nutritional value? 2. Go half and half. Those “mashed cauliflower” recipes claim to taste just like their potato counterpart, but always fall short. Try subbing in cauliflower for just half of the potatoes in your recipe instead. When it’s all mixed together, no one will even know the difference! 3. Swap out the sour cream. If your favorite recipe calls for sour cream, try using nonfat Greek yogurt instead. Same creamy texture with much less guilt. 4. Pack in some protein. Sneak some pureed navy beans into your recipe, just like you did with the cauliflower. Three cheers for added protein!
