Hot Momma: Fashion Gets Athletic

Don’t get me wrong—I’ve never met a SoulCycle workout I didn’t like. But this summer, it seems like my most demanding workout consists of chasing after my 2 year old.

At this point, Brooks could seriously give the Energizer Bunny a run for his money! From 7 AM onward, it seems like he we’re running a constant marathon. I’m pretty sure I look forward to nap time more than he does. And like any mom, I certainly have my moments of exhaustion, but I’m also thrilled to watch him grow from a baby into a little person. It’s such a thrill and I’m doing my very best to keep up with him…

Which is why I’m beyond excited that athletic-inspired fashion is very much in vogue. (Literally, I saw it in Vogue!)  As a girl growing up in the South, I was taught that there were hard and fast rules around when, where and how you could wear something.  Nowadays, the lines are gloriously blurred and you can just as easily show up to lunch wearing leggings, a distressed t-shirt with a statement necklace and ankle boots, as you can wearing a traditional sundress with kitten heels.

A longtime fan of Isabel Marant, I was so excited when she came out with her daring sneakers a few seasons back and I am equally in love with the Marc by Marc Jacobs ones below.  And what’s even more fantastic? I’m pretty sure that my feet will love this new trend even more than I do. (Oh hey, there bunions—I’m talking to you!)

This trend is seriously made for a mom on the go. And while I am a firm believer in getting out of my yoga pants, I don’t think this look mistakes fashion for laziness. In fact, I think it’s embracing the idea of the modern woman—someone who is busy and constantly on the go, but still wants to feel cool, fashionable and confident in her appearance.

I love the idea of pairing a racer striped-tee with zippered leggings and cool graphic sneakers. And don’t feel like you need to look like a Nike model to pull off this trend. The key is to mix in pieces, like my racer-striped top (from R&R Surplus at Bonafide Goods) and studded sneakers (by Philippe Model) with your favorite staple items that are already hanging in your closet. Below are some of my favorite options. I called on my designer faves for inspiration and then scoured the less expensive retailers for more affordable versions.
