Somehow 2021 is over and we’re looking ahead towards 2022. And with the change of the calendar year also comes a change in fashion trends. While some of 2021’s greatest hits are here to stay and quickly moving from trend to closet staple, there are some fresh new styles bubbling up that are poised to be huge in 2022. We saw a slew of new ones sent down the runways over the various fashion weeks but there were a few key trends that seemed to pop up over and over again.
Seeing some of the most influential designers in the world all showcase similar trends signals that those are the ones to watch the following season. From micro mini skirts to tie details to modern academia, we’ve zeroed in on 5 fashion trends that are poised to absolutely dominate in 2022.
Below are the trends about to take over, plus the key items to shop if you want to get in on said trends early.
We’ve seen tie details adorning various pieces the past few months, but the trend is going to really take hold in 2022. Tops, dresses, skirts, pants—you name it, it’s going to have a tie accent. The strappy detail adds interest to any piece, while also making you feel like you’re on vacation. Whether you’re actually headed on a getaway or not, this trend is sure to add a flirty vibe wherever you take it.
While cutouts aren’t an entirely new trend either, they’re being taken to new heights for ‘22. We’re talking bold necklines, interesting fabric layering, and fresh takes on exposed skin. With so many unique iterations of the cutout trend you can partake in a way that feels authentic to your personal style, whether that’s a sleek sweater with a peek-a-boo shoulder or mini dress with exposed sides. Designers across the board are adding cutouts to virtually every clothing category, so get ready for the year of skin.
We saw aspects of the academia trend bubbling up this fall, but it’s going to explode in 2022. Designers are offering modern twists on classic preppy trends—think ties, pleated skirts, sweater vests, high socks, loafers, and cable knit sweaters. Much like the micro mini skirt, Miu Miu really solidified this trend in their S/S ‘22 runway show. The key to nailing this trend is not to wear the complete look, but pick your favorite piece and style it with modern pieces to create a cool juxtaposition against the preppy style.
In a complete deviation from the micro mini skirt trend, we’re also going to see the opposite hemline take hold: Maxi silhouettes. Designers like Saint Lauren and Chloe sent sleek maxi hemlines down the spring runways, guaranteeing the sleek silhouette is going to blow up this year. Column skirts and floor-grazing dresses are 2022 must-haves so you may already be seeing these pop up on your Instagram feed. Maxi hemlines can be styled with virtually any shoe style, making it one of the easier trends to get in on early.
We can thank Miu Miu for this one—the Italian fashion house sent the entire fashion world into a frenzy when they showcased model after model in micro minis during Paris Fashion Week. That means the sky-high hemline is coming back once temperatures rise in the spring and summer, so get ready for very bare legs. The midi length has reigned supreme the past few years but that’s all going to change in 2022, making it the official year of the mini. Whether paired with heels, boots, or flats, this ultra-high hemline is guaranteed to take over.
