10 Major Beauty Moments From The 2021 Cannes Film Festival

By Marissa DeSantis

Over the course of its 74-year history, the Cannes Film Festival has become as well known for glamorous red carpet moments as it has for film. Culminating with the amfAR Gala benefitting AIDS research, the annual French Riviera festivities guarantee that the world-renowned actors and models in attendance will be bringing their glam squads along for the ride.

With last year’s festival put on pause due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s attendees had to make up for a lot of missed beauty moments. And they didn’t disappoint. From Bella Hadid’s ’90s supermodel-inspired makeup to actress Gemma Chan’s eye crystals, and quite a few fringes, we’re sharing some of our favorite beauty moments at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival.

Model Bella Hadid served up more glamorous moments at the Cannes Film Festival than anyone this year (including a Schiaparelli Haute Couture dress complete with a gilded brass necklace replicating the bronchial passageway into the lungs).

But it was the retro matte makeup and slicked-back updo she wore to complement her vintage Jean Paul Gaultier dress from the designer’s 2002 Spring/Summer collection that really stood out to us. Naturally, makeup artist Sam Visser used Dior Makeup on the beauty brand’s spokesmodel, focusing on razor-sharp cheekbones and a nude-pink lip.

Andie MacDowell gave us all a lesson in summer red lips, courtesy of makeup artist Val Garland, who told her to opt for orangey-red hues during the warmer weather. You can copy MacDowell’s exact color for less than $10, as Garland shared that she used L’Oréal Paris Brilliant Signature Shiny Lip Stain in Be Brilliant on the actress, who has been a spokesmodel for the beauty brand for more than 30 years.

For the amfAR Gala, model Stella Maxwell stuck to the classics with a volumized blowout and loose waves by Adir Abergel. To build maximum volume, Abergel set Maxwell’s hair with hot rollers and worked with Virtue Labs styling products (we have a feeling he used the brand’s Volumizing Primer, Mousse, and Texturizing Spray), which are formulated with Alpha Keratin 60ku to help strengthen hair and protect it from heat damage.

Actress Gemma Chan put a shimmering twist to her otherwise classic beauty moment on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet with the addition of two crystals below her lower lash line. To copy Chan, use eyelash glue to keep your crystals in place.

At the start of the festival, for the premiere of The French Dispatch, model Natasha Poly also incorporated eye crystals into her beauty look (though where Chan opted for a low, undone knot, Poly went for something higher and more structured). Makeup artist Georgi Sandev used the newly-launched Valentino Beauty line to create Poly’s look, which in addition to crystals placed at the inner and outer corners of the eye, also focused on glowing skin.

At the premiere for Stillwater, model Luma Grothe seemed to be channeling ’50s French actress (and frequent Cannes Film Festival attendee) Brigitte Bardot with her baby bangs. International L’Oréal Paris Hair Artist Stephane Lancien was behind Grothe’s look, which included a sleek French twist at the back and undoubtedly required a few of the drugstore brand’s products to create.

At the start of the Cannes Film Festival, model Candice Swanepoel proved that sometimes less is more when it comes to red carpet beauty. With her hair styled in a textured bun, Swanepoel’s makeup focused on shimmering, highlighted skin to complement her crystal embellished gown by Etro.

Makeup artist Vincent Oquendo used Charlotte Tilbury products to give Swanepoel her glow, concentrating the highlighter along her cheekbones, brow bones, cupid’s bow, and at the inner corners of her eyes.

Actress Kat Graham gave the humble ponytail red carpet-worthy levels of glam by keeping it styled low and sleek. Hairstylist Massimo Serini was behind Graham’s waist-length pony, sharing that he used Dyson styling tools and products from Sebastian Professional to give Graham’s hair a high-shine finish.

Model Anja Rubik made the case for rocking a darker lipstick in the summer with her satin finish plum color. To keep the lip from looking too severe, makeup artist Georgi Sandev kept the rest of Rubik’s makeup minimal, while hairstylist Peter Lux left her hair loose and styled in undone waves.

Belgian singer Angèle also appeared to be channeling Brigitte Bardot with her beauty look at the Cannes Film Festival, pairing classic, winged liner with full fringe. With the rest of Angèle’s hair styled in soft waves, hairstylist Marion Anée used an embellished claw clip from French accessory brand Alexandre de Paris to pull half of her hair back.
