Step Up Your Hair Game With This Season’s Coolest Accessory

By Lele Sadoughi

In the ever-important Zoom era, you might have cemented a few quick fixes to take a look to the next level without putting on full glam to sit in the house. A personal favorite? Headbands, which offer its wearer the rare ability to look polished in under three seconds. All it takes is slipping it over your bed head du jour, and your shoulders-up look is complete. As for what headbands are trending for 2021, how to find the right styles for you and what fashion pieces you should be styling your headband with, we spoke with the master herself. Lele Sadoughi, the designer behind her eponymous accessories brand, gave MollySims.com the inside scoop.

“With everyone dressing down this year, the headband has been the perfect accessory to elevate any outfit,” Sadoughi shares. “A jeweled headband to frame the face is the perfect addition for a Zoom call. We have seen an uptick in our more special, colorful, and embellished styles … [which] can be a treat or a special gift.” When at the drawing board herself, Sadoughi has a few muses and inspirations of her own. ‘Well, “More is more,’ said Tony Duquette. I draw inspiration from interior design, colorful textiles, and color combinations in paintings. Anything maximal excites me.”

Maximal, indeed. Sadoughi’s famous headbands are known to go all-out, with silhouettes padded, pearled, crystal-dappled — you name it. They’re the holy grail of headbands for celebrities and It-girls, and in the very best way, they’re not for the faint of heart. Of course, it’s with good reason:

“I believe when you look good, you feel good. Sometimes, adding a bit of sparkle can help the day move along,” says Sadoughi.

To learn how to add headbands into your style rotation, read on:

Start With Something Knotted

For those who aren’t sure if they’re ready for a more padded, embellished style, Sadoughi suggests “a starter headband — which is our classic knotted style. Then, you can move into a jeweled and crystal version!”

Go Big With Padded

Padded headbands are a very classic, yet look modern,” says Sadoughi. “We just introduced the Alice headband, as it’s a clean shape, but less padded and easier to wear.”

Cover It In Crystals

“I adore denim and crystals,” says Sadoughi. “Mixing high and low like our denim and crystal headband with a chambray button-down and sequin skirt.”

Color-Block It

“I also love to color block. A pink silk blouse, lilac pants, a neon yellow headband, and rose tortoise cat-eye sunglasses would be a fun combo,” shares Sadoughi.

Matchy-Matchy

“Don’t forget about a matching look,” says Sadoughi. This one sits on the opposite side of the spectrum from color-blocking. “These days, I can wear a blush pearl mask, matching sunglasses, a velvet and pearl headband, and a pearl mask chain. We call this #thelelelook,” she says.
