Productivity Tips For Your Next WFH Day

Working from home for the last two months has been…challenging. I am currently a businesswoman, a mom, a wife, a housekeeper, a chef, a therapist, a trainer, and a preschool teacher—all to varying degrees of success (and failure). And I’m hardly alone. Every person in the country has assumed a host of new roles in the last few months. 

So how do we stay productive when life is constantly throwing new jobs and responsibilities at us? For me, it’s sticking to a schedule, having patience with myself, and knowing when to throw the whole operation out the window, and just make pancakes for dinner.

 I’ve found these tips to be super helpful in keeping me sane and organized. But if it all goes sideways by lunchtime, cut yourself some slack. Tomorrow is another day. 


  • Do not hit the snooze button:

As tempting as it may be, do not give yourself those extra 30 minutes to sleep. Be disciplined and start your day on the right foot— which begins with waking up on time and ready for the day ahead. It’s the small accomplishments that will keep your WFH day productive from the start.

  • Avoid taking an extra-long breakfast:

Treat working from home as if you were going into the office. Set a time limit for breakfast. You may not have to commute to work anymore, but it is still very important to keep a schedule in place. It’s all about self discipline.

  • Invest in a pair of Blue Light glasses:

This is not only an important WFH tip, but also essential for life. In this day and age we are constantly exposing our eyes to digital light in our daily technology usage: iphone, computer, tv, iPads etc. Blue light filtering glasses are a great way to combat the eye strain and sleeplessness that come with excessive screen time.

  • Stray away from cluttered spaces:

If you have trouble focusing at home, one of the reasons could be from the clutter that overcomes a home (aka a home filled with small children). Toys & stuffed animals sprawled along the living room rug and leftover chicken nuggets stuck to the kitchen table— a beautiful image, ain’t it?

Messes are a recipe for instant stress and an immediate distraction. Isolate yourself to an organized workstation. Confine yourself to a downstairs office, a designated area in your bedroom, the guest bedroom, or any space that allows your mind to fuel without chaotic interference. The messes can wait.

 

 

  • Invest in noise-canceling headphones:

Meetings over zoom has been an adjustment to say the least. There have been countless times my kids are heard screaming in the background or if I take a call outside, the wind makes it completely impossible to hear. Noise-canceling headphones are the solution to the madness. These headphones connect to your bluetooth and completely silence outside noise so you can fully pay attention to the meeting at hand. Praise be.

  • Create a daily routine that you can stick to:

This one is simple: Don’t over do it. It’s okay if you didn’t get to that one task/project. You don’t need to make unrealistice expectations to feel like you accomplished enough. Tomorrow is another day. You are doing great!

  • Remember to take small breaks:

Press the reset button a few times a day. Having a “productive day” does not mean overworking yourself. Take small breaks throughout the day to remind yourself to breath, relax, and settle any stress anxiety you may be feeling. The small achievements you make throughout the day definitely deserve rewarding yourself here and there.

  • Get outside:

At the end of a long WFH day, there is nothing more satisfying than a walk outside. Fresh air and the beautiful sounds of the Earth around us is a natural remedy for stress. After sitting all day, stretch your legs and take a half hour for self reflection.

 

 

And lastly, right when the clock hits 5pm, time for that very much deserved glass of wine. You know how momma likes her wine 😉 Cheers x
