I love the wintertime but I hate what it can do to my skin. I struggle with eczema (as does my son, Brooks) so I have to be very diligent about staying moisturized. If I don’t, my skin will start to become dry, flaky, and majorly irritated. And, now that I’m pregnant? It’s even more of a reason to stay moisturized. I mean, come on. I’m already uncomfortable enough!
It all comes down to paying attention to how your skin reacts to your environment. We all change our wardrobe once the temperature drops–so why not apply the same method to your skincare? It seems like common sense but you’d be surprised how many people don’t. It’s so important!
Here are my 5 tips to get your skin through these cold, winter months:
TIP #1: Pump Up The Moisturizer
During the summer, I tend to get pretty oily so I use a light moisturizer to keep my pores clean and clear. Since my goal in the winter is to keep a bright complexion, I stick with the same toner and cleansers. I just switch out my moisturizer for something a bit heavier. It’s all about picking and choosing with what works for you.
For a hydrating glow without all that pore-clogging greasiness, I love Garnier Skin Active’s Miracle Anti-Fatigue line. The texture is more of a gel than a cream, which I prefer. I apply the Miracle Anti-Fatigue Wake-Up Hydra-Gel in the morning as a dewy palette for makeup and the Miracle Anti-Fatigue Sleeping Cream at night–which is just a bit thicker. This line actually includes an ingredient called hyaluronic acid, which helps the skin replenish its moisture. When looking for skin care products, you definitely want something that’s going to work for you up to hours after application.
Tip #2: It’s Also About How You Apply Your Moisturizer
Believe it or not–this makes a difference. If you need your moisturizer to work overtime, you must apply it as soon as you possibly can after cleansing or showering. In the winter, the air around us tends to be a bit drier, depending on where you live. So when you apply your product where there’s already moisture (like a steamy bathroom) your skin will absorb it more effectively.
TIP #3: Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate
In other words, make your dry brush your new best friend. When your skin is looking dry and dull, sometimes all it takes is a good exfoliation to slough off that dead skin. Before getting in the shower, brush in a circular motion all over your body. I like to start with my arms and move down. Not only is dry brushing good for your skin, it’s also beneficial for increasing circulation and your lymphatic system.
After you’re done, jump in the shower. Follow with a soothing body oil. I’m a huge fan of Nuxe and Tata Harper’s Revitalizing Body Oil. A natural oil like almond oil or grapeseed oil works great, too. I’m telling you–you’ll be hooked.
Tip #4: Find Your “Go-To” Sheet Mask
Take a cue from Korean beauty and stock up on sheet masks before winter hits. The cut-outs may freak out your kids and husband (you’ll look like Freddy Krueger!) but it’s worth it. The result is a bright complexion, moisture that stays locked in, and a happier momma. I love the masks from Tatcha! I tend to use mine at night
Tip #5: Avoid Overusing Hot Water
I’m not saying skip showers all together. Actually, please shower. Just lessen the time you spend rinsing off. I know a hot shower feels amazing in the winter but it depletes your skin of essential moisture. So, keep that in mind.
The hot water can dry your hair out, too so I tend to go a few days without a hair wash (even in the summer!) Dry shampoo is always a lifesaver! I also try to skip a day using my gel cleanser, too.
On those “off-days”, I’ll use micellar water (like this one from Garnier SkinActive) to remove my makeup and any impurities on my skin. It’s gentle, effective, and there’s no need to rinse. Pour a bit on a cotton pad, press gently on your face, and voila! You are cleansed.
Sometimes the key to glowing winter skin is doing less…and that’s fine by me!
