How To Survive A Cocktail Party (Guilt-Free) While Dieting

This month, I shared some of my “party smart” tips over at Glamour.com.

It’s inevitable that during your road to bikini-ready, you’ll be invited to a cocktail party. Drinks are flowing, hors d’oeuvres are served around every corner; the last thing you want is all your hard work to turn to dust.

In my career, I’ve been to my share of events while dieting. And I’ll admit … it’s hard! Fortunately, it all comes down to moderation. If you do want to enjoy a little drink here and there, (I’m a Prosecco girl, myself!) it’s all about making responsible choices!

Here are some of my party smart tips to enjoy yourself guilt-free:

Stick to a 1-2 drink maximum: Just because the drinks keep flowing doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have a limit. If you must drink, drink responsibly.

Say NO to sugary mixers: Let’s make this a rule of thumb. Anything that tastes like it came from a kid’s juice box is most likely LOADED with sugar and calories. If a mixer is a must, stick with either club soda, water, or fresh fruit and herbs.

Leave the beer to the boys: The majority of beers on the market come in at a whopping 130 calories a bottle! They don’t call it a beer belly for nothing!

Snack smart: Eat before you arrive so you aren’t tempted to snack on everything.. If you do find yourself needing a bite, stick with what you know is healthy. This means simple lean proteins and veggies with no secret ingredients aka cream based sauces or sneaky added sugars.

Hydrate, hydrate, and hydrate some more: For every glass of alcohol, drink a glass of water. Not only will you thank yourself in the morning, you will feel fuller longer and probably not be as compelled to reach for that extra glass of champagne!

One of my favorite ways to enjoy a low calorie drink is a spritzer. They are super easy to make, bubbly, and full of flavor. Try this recipe over ice and you’ve got yourself a guilt-free and refreshing summertime cocktail.

Rosemary Lemon Spritzer:

Ingredients:

  • 8 Oz. Ginger Ale
  • 5 Whole Fresh Blackberries or Blueberries
  • 1-2 Lemon Wedges
  • 1 Sprig Fresh Rosemary
  • 1 splash of vodka or gin (optional)

Directions:

  • Combine everything, except for the rosemary, together in a large glass over some ice.
  • Garnish with a sprig of rosemary and enjoy!
