Spicy Citrus Margarita

For those who weren’t aware, it’s National Margarita Day! Why? I’ll never have a clue how they make these holidays up but I’m not complaining. I love some tequila!

During the winter months, I crave something spicy that warms the soul.

Spicy food isn’t just for flavor; it’s also great for your metabolism.

Capsaicin, which is the compound in peppers, help stimulate metabolism of fatty acids in your fatty tissues, liver, and muscle. They also boost something called “thermogenesis” which helps the body turn calories into heat to use for fuel.

So, why not add a little pepper action into your cocktails? It’s probably tastier than you’d think. It pairs extremely well with the bite that tequila can bring.

To celebrate National Margarita Day, whip up a batch of these spicy citrus spirits for your happy hour or bedtime nightcap:

Spicy Citrus Margarita

Yield: 1 drink

Ingredients:

  • 4 oz tequila
  • 1 orange, juiced
  • ½ lemon, juiced
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • 1 jalapeno, thinly sliced
  • 1 oz. simple syrup
  • 1 cup crushed ice

Directions:

  1. In a glass, add 2 jalapeno slices and simple syrup. Muddle to break up jalapeno.
  2. To the glass, add orange juice, lime juice, and lemon juice. Stir to combine.
  3. Add tequila.
  4. Top off glass with ice. Stir immediately.
