WEDDING BELLS: Five Planning Tips From My Own Big Day (Part 1)

As anyone who has ever planned a wedding (or is in the process of planning one) knows, a lot of hard work and important decisions go into making the happiest day of your life everything you always dreamed it would be. But having just gone through the process myself, I learned quite a few tips and tricks along the way that allowed the big day to go off without a hitch:

  1. 1. Hire a wedding planner. If you can’t afford one or are a super D.I.Y. bride-to-be, you should still hire a day-of coordinator. That way you won’t have to think about anything besides enjoying your special day. Be sure that your wedding planner really understands your design aesthetic. I worked with the fabulous Stefanie Cove and Yifat Oren, whose signature “careful carelessness” style suited me quite perfectly.
  2. 2. Get eyelash extensions. It will make your life so much easier—no worrying about eyelash glue on your wedding day! Chances are you will have a weekend full of events, and this will take a lot of time and stress out of your schedule.
  3. 3. Let the bridal party sit. This might seem unconventional, but there is no reason to have them all standing up there with you the entire time. After the processional, we wanted our bridal party to be able to sit and enjoy the ceremony along with everyone else.
  4. 4. If you have a lot of out-of-town guests, leaving a welcome basket in their hotel rooms makes for a much-appreciated touch. Just be sure not to include anything breakable or liquid (yes, that includes wine), so that they can take it back on the airplane with them.
  5. 5. Keep a master list of your gifts and update it as you receive them! Even if you think you have a great memory, in the heat of wedding planning you will forget. Also, invest in cute, personalized thank you notes. I ordered stationary that had ‘From the Bride-To-Be’ printed on it for shower gifts, and stationary that read ‘Molly and Scott’ for wedding presents.
