Skincare Must-Have: Nyakio Beauty + A Q&A With The Founder, Nyakio Grieco

Many of my most treasured beauty secrets came from my momma. I remember watching her put on face cream in the bathroom mirror while she gave me all her tips. The best one? Always start with the neck and go up. (With that said, never forget the neck. Ever!) She also taught me the power of a little rouge and I still love my blush today. She knew her stuff and she still does. Dottie Sims looks DAMN good!

That’s why I’m so inspired by my friend, Nyakio Grieco’s new skincare line, Nyakio. As a first-generation American of Kenyan descent, she spent a lot of time traveling to Kenya to see her grandmother as a child. While there, Nyakio would learn family beauty secrets that would spark her interest in skincare. Her line, Nyakio, is inspired and dedicated to these very secrets.

I love her products and especially the story behind them. Scroll below to read a special Q&A with Nyakio about her line, the ingredients, and what makes them so special!

1)  What sparked your interest in the beauty industry? Specifically, skincare?

My beauty journey began when I was eight years old visiting my grandmother in Kenya. She taught me my first family beauty secret, and at that point my interest to create a global skincare line was sparked! My greatest inspiration comes from those family beauty secrets, and those beauty secrets shared with me by my girlfriends and discovered in my travels around the globe.

2) What does beauty mean to YOU?

Beauty to me is standing in your own light, strength and truth. Compassion, kindness, and confidence radiate from the inside to the outside and give you a naturally beautiful glow.

3. What are some of your favorite family beauty secrets?

Some of my favorite beauty secrets were passed down to me from my Kenyan grandmother who taught me to use Kenyan Coffee Beans and sugarcane to exfoliate my skin.  My grandfather was a medicine man, and stories about him extracting oils from nature to treat the skin inspire me as well. I love sharing these beauty secrets from my family as well as those shared with me by my friends and discovered in my travels.

4. What type of products are currently in your line?

Grounded in ethically and sustainable sourced ingredients, nyakio combines cultural traditions with modern, results-driven formulas. The line features a five regimen collection: (Cleanse, Exfoliate, Restore, Moisturizer and Treat) that work together to hydrate, revitalize, smooth and provide anti-aging benefits. A collection of cultural traditions and global beauty secrets that help to deliver naturally ageless beauty!

5. Where are your ingredients sourced from?

I proudly source ethical and sustainable natural ingredients, including unique, cold pressed oils from 13 countries (including Kenya, Peru, India, China, Mali, Ghana, Spain ) around the globe. Our journey takes us around the world in search of pure, effective and sustainable ingredients sourced through Community Commerce to support women’s employment and empowerment for a better living.

Formulated without sulfates, phthalates, parabens, mineral oil, petroleum, formaldehyde, and butylene glycol.

6. If you could pick a “must-have” product from your line, what would it be?
I love each and every one of my babies in the nyakio line! I would say that our Nyakio Firming Face Balm featuring Tamanu Oil from India is my constant go to. It’s sort of a magic balm. Not only is it formulated to help minimize the signs of aging on your face, I use it on my neck nightly as I’m a side sleeper and worry about aging in that area. I also use any extra on dry skin areas like my cuticles, heels, elbows. I even use it as a highlighter on my cheeks after applying make up! Apply to palm of your hands rub together and it melts into this multi-tasking wonder!! I also carry the Nyakio Quinoa de-puffing and firming eye cream with me everywhere I go!  The ceramic tip applicator is instantly cooling and wakes up my tired eyes!
All Nyakio products are available EXCLUSIVELY at ULTA and ULTA.com. Also, check out her beautiful sizzle video below!

My Favorite New Beauty Launches For Spring

I love beauty products, especially when I try out something new. And as you can see…momma went shopping! I can go a little overboard in the name of beauty but they don’t call me a “product junkie (whore)” for nothing.

This spring, it’s all about a fresh glow. Here are some of my favorite new beauty launches of the season:

Glossier Cloud Paint:

I’m in love a cream blush and I love Glossier so I KNEW I’d be obsessed with this product. It’s gel based which makes it buildable and easy to apply. It’s also sheer which blends into the skin beautifully. I’ve been dabbing a bit on the apples of my cheeks and across the bridge of my nose. There are four colors but I prefer the Dusk shade. It doubles as a bronzer, too! Oh, and it doesn’t hurt to add that EVERYONE seemed to be wearing it on the Oscar red carpet.

Wander Beauty On-The-Go Blush & Illuminator:

I mean, they had me at “on-the-go!” But, seriously. Wander Beauty is definitely becoming the new it brand. I love that I can throw this stick into my purse and have blush and highlighter for whenever I need.

Frank Body Glow Mask:

You’ve probably heard of Frank Body from the super popular coffee scrubs they have. Not going to lie–coffee is a great exfoliator especially for any cellulite issues. They’ve recently come out with a face mask that brings a serious glow factor. You also only need to leave it on for 5 minutes to get the full result so it’s perfect for mommas!

Thank You Farmer Sun Project Shimmer Sun Essence:

Every spring/summer, I’m always on the hunt for a new sunscreen. And, I think I’ve found a winner! It’s unlike any product I’ve seen recently. The brand, Thank You Farmer, is Korean which is how you know it’s good. K-Beauty is EVERYTHING! This sunscreen is SPF 30 and has a shimmery pink finish on the skin. A highlighter and a sun protector? Yes, please.

R+Co Palm Springs Pre-Shampoo Treatment Mask

This product is especially for people with damage from heat styling, coloring, or from being out in the sun. It’s like that extra boost to your conditioning treatment. Apply to dry hair, leave on for 10 minutes, and then shampoo. It also smells AMAZING! Like a literal vacation.

Lipstick Queen Mornin’ Sunshine Lipstick:

This product is magic. It goes on yellow…but turns coral. Like a really, really pretty coral. It’s super moisturizing, too!

Milk Makeup Blur Stick:

This oil-free and silicone-free product has been called a snapchat filter for your face. I mean, who doesn’t want that? The blur stick looks beige but goes on clear to minimize pore size and any other imperfections. I’ll be honest–I bought this product the day it came out. It’s so good. You can apply it as a primer or just wear alone.

Litoralle Aromatica Isola Rosa Perfume:

For all the people who love Le Labo but can’t get over the price point, meet Litoralle Aromatica. This LA-based perfumery designs, creates, packages, and labels by hand all in small batches. Their newest scent, Isola Rosa is so fresh for spring. The best part? You only need one little spritz. The scent lasts all day!

What are your beauty must-haves for spring? Comment below! Let’s be honest– a girl can never have too many!

My Favorite Beauty Trends From Fashion Week

I love experimenting with beauty. Every year during Fashion Week, I look forward to seeing what the new trends are so I can try them out for myself.

This season on the runway, it was all about the BOLD and the BARE. Here are some of my favorites:

Jason Wu: Colored Liner + A Bold Red Lip

Yes, this goes against everything we’ve been told. It used to be that you never paired a bold eye with a lip…but in this case, it works. Since the lid itself is bare, the colored liner blends nicely with the pop of red on the lip.

When it comes to liner, it really depends on your eye color. The bright blue, seen on the runway at Jason Wu, is perfect for anyone with blue eyes. For brown eyes, go a little bit darker with a navy. Green eyes look great with a rich plum. I tend to prefer using liquid liner rather than powder because it’s easier to apply. And, if you want some bright color without the boldness of a liner–a colored mascara works, too!

I love, love, love this understated look. Pair a frosty blue or silver lid with a nude lip. It’s so romantic! For a night out, add a bit of liner your top lid to make your eyes pop more.

I love the richness of a deep burgundy red–especially in a monochromatic look. To tone it down a bit, I loved Kendall Jenner’s look. A muted burgundy on the eyes and a bold burgundy on the lip.

My Oscar Night Glam

So, this momma is officially back in action! I won’t lie–I was a little nervous. The Vanity Fair party for the Oscars was my first red carpet since giving birth and it happens to be a major one. It can be a little intimidating especially for someone who has been cooped up in a house breastfeeding for weeks.

Since I’m still not exactly where I want to be post-baby weight, I wanted to wear something that would slim me in all the right places. My stylist, Jeff Kim, chose this GORGEOUS black Tony Ward Couture gown for the event. Also, I could practically live in these Forevermark earrings and rings. They were so perfect!

What you don’t see under that dress is the heavy-duty corset and Spanx helping this momma out. I mean, you gotta do what you gotta do! Also–how handsome does Scott look in his Tom Ford suit?! I mean…come on!

Now, let’s talk glam. My makeup artist, Nikki La Rose and hair stylist, Kristin Heitkotter worked some serious magic on me. The result was Hollywood waves with a pretty peach glow. I loved it! Annie Lam from Nails By Design on Sunset Blvd painted my nails a classic taupe.

It truly takes a village, people! What you see on the red carpet takes some major preparation. If you want to try this same look at home, here are the products Nikki and Kristin used to create it:

The Best Beauty Products For Tired Mommas

baby beauty 13 copy

I don’t even need to explain how exhausting caring for a newborn is. If you’re a mom, you already know. Some mornings I feel as if I could pass as an extra on The Walking Dead. Luckily, there are ways to look a bit better than you feel. The key to looking like you’ve had a great sleep (even though you’ve been up every 2 hours on the dot) is to attempt to TREAT the problem areas and then CONCEAL the sh*t out of them.

I know what you’re thinking. How will I ever find time between feedings, diapers, and all that comes in between? Trust me, I understand. It’s hard for me to get motivated, too. But giving yourself even 5 minutes to fix yourself up a bit can help boost your energy and your self-esteem. That’s sometimes all it takes to keep you powering through your day.

Keep a few or all of these products in your beauty arsenal for those mornings you need a major pick-me-up. Trust me, the word brightening will become your new best friend.

Step 1: Attempt To Treat The Problem

Brightening Sheet Masks:

baby beauty 2 copy

I love a good sheet mask. Not only do they give you an instant glow but they are relaxing and cooling upon application. The only downside? You may scare your husband and kids. Once you put that sheet mask on, the resemblance to Jason from Friday the 13th is pretty hilarious.

If a full face sheet mask seems a little too intense for you, there are TONS of options that are just for under eye. The Klorane patches have always been a favorite.

Brightening Moisturizers:

baby beauty 4 copy

A good brightening moisturizer is a godsend. When I’ve had absolutely no sleep, my skin can look pretty dull. Dull skin is never a good look…and trying to layer makeup on top of that? It can look even worse. Pick a moisturizer with a brightening color corrector or luminizer, preferably with some type of antioxidant in it. When it comes to getting the glow, Vitamin C is always a good ingredient choice! Any gel or water-based serum will also help lock in that needed moisture.

Step 2: Mask + Conceal

Brightening Primer:

baby beauty 6 copy

If you’ve already applied your brightening moisturizer, you can feel free to skip this step. But once you see how they both look together, you won’t want to. A primer will help keep the makeup in place so you don’t have to keep applying. Let’s be honest–new moms don’t have time for that. And if it’s a brightening primer, it will punch up the glow even more.

Brightening Concealer:

baby beauty 5

THANK YOU, CONCEALER! You are truly a friend when I need you the most. I recently had such dark circles that I scared myself when I looked in the mirror. I’m serious. But, here’s the catch–you may feel like you need that heavy-duty option but you don’t. It can actually make it worse. That heavy concealer is perfect for any pimples or discoloration but if your main concern is the under-eye, stick to something creamy and light. The heavy-duty will end up just

But, here’s the catch–you may feel like you need that heavy-duty option but you don’t. It can actually make it worse. That heavy concealer is perfect for any pimples or discoloration but if your main concern is the under-eye, it will just cake up and flake off.

For dark circles, stick to something creamy, light, and one shade lighter than your skin tone. When in doubt, look for our keyword: brightening. We want an easy glide-on application and not a product that’s going to bring out any fine lines or discoloration.

Foundation:

baby beauty 7 copy

I’ll be honest–I’ve never been a huge foundation girl. Sometimes it can feel way too heavy and if my skin is feeling gross, it will just sit on my pores and look horrible. Just like the concealer, you need to think light and bright. Brands like Nars, Tarte, and Bare Minerals have options that hide any imperfections while still showing your skin. Apply with your fingers or a beauty blender for the best coverage.

Highlighter:

baby beauty 8

Before you start going crazy with the highlighter, there’s one rule to mention. Don’t overdo it. We aren’t trying to go for a post-partum disco ball look. With a brush or your fingers, focus on the high points of the face…with a gentle hand. It’s easy to go a little overboard especially when you really need it. In other words, a little goes a long way.

Sweep a little under the eyebrow, a dab at the top of the cheekbone, run a line down the bridge of your nose and you are set. I prefer highlighters with a bronze hue to them because I think it gives a more natural look. The gold highlighters are better for a night out or when you’re being photographed..and I’m doing neither at the moment.

Bright Lip/Cheek Duo:

baby beauty 9

Was anyone else’s momma all about the blush and lip? Maybe it was just a Southern thing but she lived by the fact that a little rouge went a long way. I used to roll my eyes but now I get it. When you feel as tired as a zombie, a little pop of color on the cheeks and lips can take your look from dead to alive. To make your routine faster, pick a cream duo product that works as both a cheek and lip. A bright pink or raspberry tint works like magic.

La Prairie Cellular Radiance Cream Blush // Wander Beauty On-The-Go Blush And Illuminator // Tom Ford Cream Cheek Color in Pink Sand // Lilah B. Divine Duo Lip & Cheek

Plumping Mascara + Eye Brightening Liner:

baby beauty 10

When you’re exhausted, eyes are the biggest dead giveaway. That’s where a great mascara and eyeliner come in. For mornings like this, I prefer a mascara with a fatter brush. I’m usually not as concerned about length as I am about the thickness of my lashes. A thicker brush also makes application easier and faster, in my opinion.

Eyeliner can be tricky. Many women will reach for a dark shade but that can actually make your eyes look smaller and unfortunately, more tired. Instead, pick a nude shade with even a slight pink tint to it. You’ll be surprised how much a nude liner will open up the eyes and neutralize the redness. Apply to the lower inner rim and inner corner of the eyes. The same liner can also be used under the brows for more definition. And when the liner isn’t enough? Eye drops. Lots of eye drops.

Dry Shampoo:

baby beauty 12

I’m embarrassed to say how many days I’ve gone without washing my hair…especially as a mom to a newborn. But, that’s what dry shampoo is for! I always spray it at night so my hair has a nice messy texture in the morning after it sits for awhile.

A Pick-Me-Up Fragrance:

baby beauty 11

I truly believe in the power of aromatherapy. When you’re tired, there are certain scents that can help you feel more productive, focused, and energetic. For example, citrus scents like orange and lemon and herbs like rosemary or juniper are an instant perk-up. Spray as a perfume or just sniff when needed.

Like I said, you don’t have to use every step. It’s all about picking and choosing what works for you and your routine as a new mom. Even if it just makes you feel a little bit better, that’s what matters!

5 Ways To Switch Up Your Skincare Routine For Winter

I love the wintertime but I hate what it can do to my skin. I struggle with eczema (as does my son, Brooks) so I have to be very diligent about staying moisturized. If I don’t, my skin will start to become dry, flaky, and majorly irritated. And, now that I’m pregnant? It’s even more of a reason to stay moisturized. I mean, come on. I’m already uncomfortable enough!

It all comes down to paying attention to how your skin reacts to your environment. We all change our wardrobe once the temperature drops–so why not apply the same method to your skincare? It seems like common sense but you’d be surprised how many people don’t. It’s so important!

Here are my 5 tips to get your skin through these cold, winter months:

TIP #1: Pump Up The Moisturizer

During the summer, I tend to get pretty oily so I use a light moisturizer to keep my pores clean and clear. Since my goal in the winter is to keep a bright complexion, I stick with the same toner and cleansers. I just switch out my moisturizer for something a bit heavier. It’s all about picking and choosing with what works for you.

For a hydrating glow without all that pore-clogging greasiness, I love Garnier Skin Active’s Miracle Anti-Fatigue line. The texture is more of a gel than a cream, which I prefer. I apply the Miracle Anti-Fatigue Wake-Up Hydra-Gel in the morning as a dewy palette for makeup and the Miracle Anti-Fatigue Sleeping Cream at night–which is just a bit thicker. This line actually includes an ingredient called hyaluronic acid, which helps the skin replenish its moisture. When looking for skin care products, you definitely want something that’s going to work for you up to hours after application.

Tip #2: It’s Also About How You Apply Your Moisturizer

Believe it or not–this makes a difference. If you need your moisturizer to work overtime, you must apply it as soon as you possibly can after cleansing or showering. In the winter, the air around us tends to be a bit drier, depending on where you live. So when you apply your product where there’s already moisture (like a steamy bathroom) your skin will absorb it more effectively.

TIP #3: Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate

In other words, make your dry brush your new best friend. When your skin is looking dry and dull, sometimes all it takes is a good exfoliation to slough off that dead skin. Before getting in the shower, brush in a circular motion all over your body. I like to start with my arms and move down. Not only is dry brushing good for your skin, it’s also beneficial for increasing circulation and your lymphatic system.

After you’re done, jump in the shower. Follow with a soothing body oil. I’m a huge fan of Nuxe and Tata Harper’s Revitalizing Body Oil. A natural oil like almond oil or grapeseed oil works great, too. I’m telling you–you’ll be hooked.

Tip #4: Find Your “Go-To” Sheet Mask

Take a cue from Korean beauty and stock up on sheet masks before winter hits. The cut-outs may freak out your kids and husband (you’ll look like Freddy Krueger!) but it’s worth it. The result is a bright complexion, moisture that stays locked in, and a happier momma. I love the masks from Tatcha! I tend to use mine at night

Tip #5: Avoid Overusing Hot Water

I’m not saying skip showers all together. Actually, please shower. Just lessen the time you spend rinsing off. I know a hot shower feels amazing in the winter but it depletes your skin of essential moisture. So, keep that in mind.

The hot water can dry your hair out, too so I tend to go a few days without a hair wash (even in the summer!) Dry shampoo is always a lifesaver! I also try to skip a day using my gel cleanser, too.

On those “off-days”, I’ll use micellar water (like this one from Garnier SkinActive) to remove my makeup and any impurities on my skin. It’s gentle, effective, and there’s no need to rinse. Pour a bit on a cotton pad, press gently on your face, and voila! You are cleansed.

Sometimes the key to glowing winter skin is doing less…and that’s fine by me!
