Winning Recipe: My Kentucky Derby Pie

You know you’re from the South when…

  • You call your father Big Daddy.
  • You knew how to set a proper table before you knew your ABCs.
  • You can’t have Christmas dinner without Derby Pie for dessert.

Derby Pie is one of my very favorite Southern sweets (second only to my mama’s red velvet cake, of course). It’s a chocolate and walnut tart that originated right in my home state of Kentucky, and it’s simply divine. Here’s my family’s recipe in case you want to give it a try this holiday season:

Ingredient:
½ cup firmly packed brown sugar
½ stick butter
3 eggs
1 cup white Karo syrup
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 heaping Tbsp of Bisquick pancake mix
1 cup pecans
1 cup of Nestle chocolate chips (yellow bag)
1 pre-made (uncooked) piecrust

Directions
Layer the chocolate chips on the bottom of the piecrust and set aside. Mix together all other ingredients except the pecans and pour mixture into piecrust. Top with pecans. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Test with a toothpick. If it comes out clean, it’s done. If not, bake for another 5 minutes.

Quick, easy, and delicious—just how I like it!

What are your favorite desserts to make around the holidays?

Love, Molly
